David Spires Obituary

David Spires, 69 of Sparks passed away Sunday, December 9, 2018 at South Georgia Medical Center surrounded by several family and friends.  His home going celebration will be held Sunday, December 16, 2018 at the First Assembly of God Church in Adel at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. W. A. Parrish, and Rev. John R. Walker officiating.  Interment will follow at Stauton Cemetery in Lenox.  The family will be receiving friends Saturday evening from 6-8 p.m at Purvis Funeral Home.  

David was born October 26, 1949 to the late John Lewis and Rachel Tillman Spires in Adel, GA.  After the passing of his father when David was age 9, his mother remarried later to George Conger.  He was a graduate of Cook County High School, then went on to serve his country in The United States Navy.  After being Honorably Discharged from the U. S. Navy, David married Irene L. Spires.  David then began his Law Enforcement career with the Tifton Police Department in April 1975, where he worked himself through the ranks from Patrolman to Assistant Chief and serving as Interim Chief for the department during 1986 into 1987.  he continued his career with Tifton Police Department until October 26, 2004, where he retired as Assistant Chief/Major.  After being retired 6 months, David decided to go back to work, where he joined the Lenox Police Department as a Patrol Officer.  David then became Chief of Police for Lenox until his medical retirement in July 2011.  

David enjoyed spending quality time with his family and friends, cutting grass, and his horses.  He was known for giving great advice and sitting on his front porch monitoring traffic.  David was a Cops Cop and a Man's Man, you would always know where you stood with him.  He was a Gentle Giant with a heart of Gold.  David was literally ONE CALL AWAY!

David leaves behind his wife, Irene of 46 years of Sparks; son, Chris who followed in his father's footsteps as a law enforcement officer and daughter in law, Katrina Spires of Sparks; daughter, Crystal Spires Craft of Sparks; grandchildren, David Craft, Emily Craft, Paden Spires, Candler Spires, and Camden Spires; he leaves behind his dog-ter, Roxanne; loving sister, Margaret Stripling of Adel; brother & sister in law, Harold and Connie Leverett; many nieces & nephews.  David was preceded in death by his stepfather, George Conger; brothers, Jimmy Spires, Jessie Spires, Tony Spires, and John Spires; sisters, Martha Gillam, Marsha Chatting; son in law, Allen Craft; and several nieces & nephews.
