Edward Godwin Obituary

Edward Lee Godwin, 80, of Quitman died May 12, 2018 at the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital from complications following a heart valve replacement.  Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Maxwell-Purvis Funeral Home, 908 N. Court St., Quitman, GA with Rev Randy Fields officiating.  Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.  The family will be receiving friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Mr. Godwin was born on August 30, 1937 in Brooks County, GA to Amos and Eula Godwin. He worked as a professional pipefitter and welder traveling to many different locations for his trade. He was a 53-year member of the Pipeliners Local 798 and a 25-year member of the IBEW and Local 102. Throughout his career, he was highly sought after for difficult pipeline work, and he worked in the oil refiners of Saudia Araba and on the Alaska Pipeline during his earlier years.

In 1958 he married Frances LaRosa. They lived in Quitman where they raised one daughter Frances Godwin Herndon and one son Nicky Godwin. After retiring Edward enjoyed working in his workshop building many different projects from wood and metal. He perfected his own gas burner and built several smoker/cookers for his use and for others. Edwards favorite past time was watching his grandson, Nick Herndon, play baseball and talking with him about their favorite MLB players.  Anyone that had a chance to talk with Edward knows that Nick was his whole heart.

His family paid this tribute to him, ‘Edward was one of the wisest people you would ever meet. His direct approach, his love for his family and his kindest towards people make him a person that will be sorely missed.’

Mr. Godwin was proceeded in death by his son Nicky Godwin, brother Eli Godwin and his parents. He is survived by his wife Frances LaRosa Godwin of Quitman; daughter, Frances Herndon, her husband Joey of Thomasville and their son Nick Herndon.
