Gene Sumner Obituary

Mr. Gene Arlin Sumner, 79 of Sparks went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at Tift Regional Medical Center.  Mr. Sumner was born October 1, 1938 to the late Lawyer Sumner and Bessie Mae Lindsey Sumner.  He served in the Army National Guard, and was owner and operator of Sumner Starter, Alternator, & Electric Motor Service, and Gene Sumner Farms.  Mr. Sumner was a member of Beulah Holiness Baptist Church and loved to make music, sing, and fish.  He loved his family,great grandchildren and friends dearly.  

Survivors include his wife, Cora Mae Sumner of 59 years of Sparks, whom he loved very much; son & daughter in law, Van & Sabrina Sumner of Sparks; daughter & son in law, Toni & Scott Shealey of Adel; four grandchildren, Justin (Mandi) Shealey of Adel, Lindsay (Clayton) Danforth of West Berrien, Nicole Sumner of Middleburg, FL, and Drew Sumner of Sparks; five great grandchildren, Tripp Danforth of West Berrien, Reed Danforth of West Berrien, Luke Shealey of Adel, Caroline Shealey of Adel, and Harley Sumner of Middleburg, Fl; two sister in laws, Faye Sumner of Sparks, and Carolyn Sumner of Omega.  Mr. Sumner was preceded in death by his parents, Lawyer & Bessie Mae Lindsey Sumner; three brothers, Cranford Sumner, Rev. Paul Sumner, and Doyle Sumner; two sisters, Mary Lane, and Billie Hester; three infant siblings.  

Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 24, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. at Beulah Holiness Baptist Church with Rev. Johnathan Walker, and Rev. Vernon Hughes officiating.  Interment will follow at Woodlawn City Cemetery Annex.  The family will be receiving friends Saturday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Purvis Funeral Home.  Serving as active pallbearers are Russ Goodman, Chase Daughtrey, Clayton Danforth, Dale Hobby, Scott Hobby, and Keith Giddens.  Honorary pallbearers are Ronnie Williams, Rev. Gordon Statum, Wendell Sumner, Charles Sumner, Hayward Hester, Randy Lane, Ronnie Jo Sumner, Ronnie Hester, Larry Raines, Ray Gene Sumner, Render Folsom, Jack Joiner, Jeff Taylor, Fred Powell, Billy Crumley, Dennis Griffin, Charles Goff, Nolan Bennett and Tim Purvis.
