Mary Fountain Obituary

Mary Summers Fountain, 82, widow of Ross Fountain and mother of Christy Fountain Barnes, passed away on Monday, May 13, 2019 at the Langdale Hospice House in Valdosta.

Mary was born in Cook County, Georgia to Gordon and Ada Summers and had resided there until adulthood.  After living in Jacksonville, Florida for a number of years, she had resided in Valdosta for the past ten years.  Mary was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church near Cecil, Georgia and the Valdosta Senior Center Knitters’ Group.  While living in Jacksonville, she participated in a local quilters’ club and made many beautiful quilts and craft items with a quilt motif. Her precision and attention to detail were evident in both the quilts and knitted items she produced.

She is survived by her daughter, Christy Fountain Barnes; her grandson, Joshua Barnes; granddaughter and husband, Kimberly and Ed Maddox; great grandchildren, Dakota Nixon and McKinnley Maddox, all of Jacksonville, Florida; sisters, Louise Atkinson of Dothan, Alabama and Anna Lawhorn of Adel; and sister-in-law, Doris Summers of Valdosta.  She was preceded in death by her parents as well as her husband, Ross Fountain; her brother, Bill Summers; a nephew, Andy Lawhorn and two brothers-in-law, Gary Lawhorn and Jerry Atkinson.  Also surviving are her very special neighbors and friends, Kay McGown, and Calvin and Ray Jean Henry of Valdosta.  

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 16, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Purvis Funeral Home with Rev. Ike Jefferson officiating.  The family will be receiving friends one hour prior to the service from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home.  Graveside services will be held Friday, May 17, 2019 at 12:30 p.m. at the Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Rd., Jacksonville, Fl  32218 with Rev. Ike Jefferson officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to Fellowship Baptist Church or to your favorite charity.
