Barry Owens

Barry Carter Owens, 72 of Quitman passed away Tuesday, April 12, 2022 at South Georgia Medical Center. He was born January 18, 1950 in Haysi, Virginia to the late Garmon & Lucy Deel Owens. He was of the Baptist Faith and had retired as a truck driver. Barry loved riding on his motorcycle and in 1997 he became a member of the GA Gold Wing Road Riders Association. For about 25 years, he was the chapter director for Chapter O in Tifton. Barry was the state assistant director for GWRRA for the state of Georgia for 8 years. He was also an education instructor for the State of Georgia, and he always promoted safety.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Dixon Owens of Quitman; stepbrothers, Greg Ellerbee of Atlanta, and Al Ellerbee of Ashburn; several nieces & nephews from Brunswick, Texas, and Tampa, FL. Barry was preceded in death by his brothers, Johnny Lee Owens, and Mark Owens; and his stepfather, T. B. Ellerbee.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 16, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at Maxwell – Purvis Funeral Home with Rev. Arnold Hodum officiating. Interment will follow at Westview Cemetery in Moultrie. The family will be receiving friends from 11:00 – 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
