Mr. Sherry Edwin Mathis “Ed” of Quitman passed away Friday, August 7, 2020 at Langdale Hospice House in Valdosta after an extended illness. Mr. Mathis was born June 24, 1943 to the late Edwin Matthew Mathis, Jr and Mary Nell Mathis. He graduated from Brooks County High School and attended Georgia Military College and the University of Georgia School of Banking and Finance. He began his career in Commercial Banking and later worked for the Department of Agriculture. He later continued his career and retired from Miller Brewing Co. in Albany, GA. Mr. Mathis was a member of the Quitman First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his son, David Mathis, M.D. and his wife, Allison Scheetz Mathis, M.D. of Macon; grandchildren, Taylor Mathis and Morgan Mathis of Macon; special double first cousin, Angela Mathis Ward and her husband, Max of Dixie; nephews, Keith Ward and Kevin Ward of Dixie; special friend and caregiver, Pam Williams and her husband, Doug of Quitman. He is also survived by many special friends that were dear to his heart. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Wanda Sharon Mathis and his special aunt and uncle, Quinton and Frances Mathis.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 11, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at Maxwell-Purvis Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Shierling and Rev. Arnold Hodum officiating. Interment will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery. In honor and memory of Mr. Mathis’ life, the family suggest that contributions be made to the Georgia Sheriffs Youth Home, 5671 Boys Ranch Rd., Hahira, GA 31632.
