Mr. John Franklin Howard, 90, of Pavo passed away Monday, October 12, 2020 at his home. He was born May 19, 1930 in Pavo to the late David Franklin and Mattie Will Howard. He graduated from Barwick School where he played tennis and basketball. He married Barbara Pennington in November 29, 1964 at St.James Espiscopal Church in Americus after dating for 5 years. Together they raised 3 children and taught them to love one another, to forgive, to laugh, to help others, to be kind, be a loyal friend, be proud of your community and to be a good neighbor. Mr. Howard worked for the railroad and drove a bulldozier before he was able to farm which he loved and always wanted to do. He grew a garden and was always willing to share his bounty. He loved Brooks County and the family farm where he was born and where he died. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Mr. Howard was very active in his community, having served on the boards of the Brooks County Farm Bureau, the Barwick Bank, Westbrook School and the Farmers Home Administration. He was a member of the Barwick Chamber of Commerce and a trustee and lifetime member of Oak Grove Methodist Church, a avid reader and regular visitor to the Pavo Library.
Mr. Howard was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and neighbor. He is survived by his wife, Barbara P. Howard of Pavo; his daughters, Lynn and her husband Robbie Edmondson of Pavo and Lori Howard of St. Simons Island; son, Lee and his wife Janet Howard of Thomasville; grandchildren, Shelby Howard and Luke Edmondson; he is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was proceeded in death by his sister, Doris Cowart. He delighted in his family and loved having them nearby and before you even left he was asking how soon you would be back.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, October 17, 2020, 10:00 AM at Rosewood Cemetery in Barwick with Mr. W.A. Parrish, Lay Servant at Oak Grove UMC officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. The family respectfully requests that everyone wear mask and respect social distance guidelines.
