Sandra Phillips Cooper, 79, of Quitman, Georgia, passed away on Tuesday, July 27, 2021. Born on May 14, 1942 to the late C.J. and Myrtice Musgrove Phillips, she graduated from Brooks County High School and Valdosta State College with a degree in education.
Sandra married Willis Cooper on October 2, 1964. They spent many years living in both Charleston, South Carolina, and Valdosta, Georgia, before returning to Quitman. She was an English teacher for the first part of her professional life and then served as a State Farm insurance agent for thirty years.
Community service, education, and supporting her small town were always very important to her. After becoming an insurance agent, she continued as a teacher by volunteering in the local adult literacy program and served as the representative from Brooks County on the advisory board for Wiregrass Georgia Technical College. She further contributed to the community as a member of the Rotary Club and was the second woman ever to serve as a local president in the state of Georgia. In addition, Sandra was a member of the Quitman – Brooks County Chamber of Commerce and was a past president.
She was an active member of the Quitman Church of Christ and volunteered with the ladies there. Her weekly Bible study with close friends held a very special place in her heart.
Sandra is survived by her husband, Willis, of Quitman; her son, Jeffery Cooper, and her daughter, Jenifer (Bobby) Morgan, both of Jacksonville, Florida; three grandchildren, Allison (Alec) Manfre, Jay Morgan, and Anna Morgan; a brother, H.R. “Sonny” (Janice) Phillips of Tallahassee, Florida; brothers-in-law, Robert (Dianna) Cooper and Hugh (Lynn) Cooper, both of Moultrie, Georgia; one sister-in-law, Marybeth Cooper, of Charleston, South Carolina; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Tommy Roberts; and her brother-in-law, Emory Cooper.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 31, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Quitman Church of Christ Mr. Drew Suttles and Mr. Andy Sykes officaiting. Interment will follow at Welcome Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Maxwell – Purvis Funeral Home on Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Georgia Christian School in Dasher.
